Software solutions for industrial SUSTAINABILITY

Software Solutions for Industrial Sustainability | COPA-DATA

Sustainable Manufacturing and Energy Infrastructure

The world is confronted simultaneously with a number of crises, among them climate change, disrupted supply chains and workforce shortages. The seventeen sustainability development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations represent a widely accepted framework for acting towards a better world, at country, at organization or even at personal level.

Today, global warming has reached a level where its dramatic effects are visible without sophisticated research. From drying lakes to flooded coasts, from burning forests to ocean acidification and losses of biodiversity, from climate migration to high repair costs, extraordinary disasters are increasingly becoming the new normal.

The main cause of these threatening trends is clearly the accumulation of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the atmosphere, which is mainly due to the use of fossil fuels. The global goal of "Net Zero" is therefore essential for sustainable development. The world is in a time of change, with all the challenges and opportunities that this entails. What does this mean for manufacturing and energy infrastructure?

Business as usual is no longer an option

We need to transform continuously. On one side, companies need to navigate through all actual crises, staying resilient in a volatile environment. On the other side, they need to innovate their products, processes and even their entire businesses in order to shape a better future. The use of sustainability software solutions is becoming increasingly important for corporate success.

Entire value chains and industrial ecosystems are transforming. The mindset of a circular economy is gaining in significance. Political efforts such as the EU’s Green Deal aim to shift the corporate agenda to more climate-friendly, sustainable practices. Evidence increasingly shows consumers prefer products and companies with a better environmental and social impact. Change is accelerated through regulations aimed at increasing transparency, commitment and, above all, pragmatic measures to achieve sustainability goals.

This is a challenge for everyone and for every organization and it is all about people change: how can we drive and take the lead in this transformation? How much training is needed for the workforce? What are the tools that will enable an easy journey towards industrial sustainability?

Sustainability at COPA-DATA

At COPA-DATA, we are fully embracing an ambitious journey towards sustainability. We are investing in decarbonizing our operations and implementing zenon as our own sustainability software solution. That’s because "Smart" technologies and infrastructures must follow a sustainable mindset.

The path to a sustainable future with zenon

In a global economy, everything is interconnected. Cross-border supply chains are vital, but they are also susceptible to disruption. In order to achieve sustainable operations, it is necessary to embrace resilience and flexibility. The future demands that industries embrace digital technologies and industrial automation. It is imperative that new innovations are created and implemented in order to overcome the challenges of transformation. The following key topics must be addressed now and in the future:

  • Digitalization and process automation drive efficiency and help to minimize waste and emissions. Furthermore, they enable precise control over consumption, with a focus on energy-intensive and critical production. Keep the balance between high product quality, sustainability and operational excellence.

  • Transitioning to renewable energies involves harnessing natural resources like solar, wind, and hydro power. Efficient energy storage systems reduce their volatility. Less dependence on fossil fuels paves the way to a cleaner energy future and the electrification of all sectors.

  • Optimize resource use, minimize waste and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). Lean manufacturing, automation and advanced analytics streamline operations, reducing costs and environmental impact. This approach is sustainable while maintaining competitiveness in global markets.

  • Upgrade existing equipment with modern technology to improve efficiency and functionality. This process increases performance, reduces energy consumption and extends the life of existing equipment. This is often far more economical than the cost of a complete replacement.

  • The electrification of economies and industries increases resilience and self-sufficiency. It requires robust generation, transmission and distribution systems. Key requirements include grid modernization, integration of renewable and conventional energy sources, and smart orchestration of supply and demand.

  • Technologies like industrial IoT and data analytics improve processes, predict maintenance needs, and optimize resource management. This transformation drives productivity, sustainability, and reliability, creating a smarter and more resilient industrial landscape.

  • Industries and companies are facing workforce shortages. This is why it is crucial for them to have access to efficient engineering solutions and flexible technologies. The future skills that will be in demand are adaptability, digital proficiency and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • To protect sensitive data and systems from cyber threats, continuous monitoring and proactive measures are essential to ensure trust and reliability. Compliance with regulations and standards is the only way to mitigate risk, protect against potential breaches and maintain data integrity.

Being more sustainable through zenon, is that possible?

Can the United Nations' sustainability goals be achieved while remaining economically competitive?

zenon can support you in your digital transformation and make you fit for a more sustainable future.

We are convinced that in the intersection between sustainability and digitalization, a scalable software solution like zenon will help you become more competitive and, at the same time, more sustainable.

In an ecosystem, everything is interrelated and influences each other. The same is true in the globalized economy, where many processes are intertwined and influence each other.

Transnational supply chains have become indispensable, but they falter or breakdown as soon as one link in this chain gets out of sync. Sustainable business is, therefore, also always about robustness and flexibility.

It is about actively addressing and implementing measures and solutions. Digital technologies and industrial automation are crucial for the expansion of tomorrow's industry. In this future world, cost pressure, transparency and the tracking of one's own process data will become new resources.

In the context of climate protection goals, there is also talk of "net zero manufacturing" or “industrial decarbonization”. This mainly involves reducing harmful greenhouse gases, primarily CO₂, in the manufacturing environment and the entire supply chain (Scope 3). Companies that have both Scope 1 and Scope 2 transparently under control can also more easily ensure the necessary Scope 3 classification as a supplier for their customers. Due to the open interfaces in zenon as well as the extensive possibility to pass on data across companies and production locations by means of the software platform, our solutions support the sustainability initiatives of our customers.
